What do you have in common with Einstein?

Filed under: Uncategorized — minimax @ 10:18 pm

What do you know about Albert Einstein? Do you think he was the greatest scientist ever? Would you like to be like Einstein? If so, in what ways? If not, why not? Are there any famous people whom you are very much like?

einstein

barefoot : not wearing any shoes or socks  • catchphrase : a phrase which is often repeated by and therefore becomes connected with a particular organization or person, especially someone famous such as a television entertainer  • celebrate : to take part in special enjoyable activities in order to show that a particular occasion is important  • chimney : a hollow structure that allows the smoke from a fire inside a building to escape to the air outside  • compose : to produce music, poetry or formal writing  • enforce : to make people obey a law, or to make a particular situation happen or be accepted  • equate : to consider one thing to be the same as or equal to another thing  • fanatical : having a strong admiration for something is considered to be extreme or unreasonable  • fond : having a great liking for someone or something  • genre : a style, especially in the arts, that involves a particular set of characteristics  • incident : an event which is either unpleasant or unusual  • loathe : to hate someone or something  • long-term : continuing a long time into the future  • mend : to repair something that is broken or damaged  • monogamy : when someone has a sexual relationship or marriage with only one other person at a time  • monotony : a condition that remains the same and not changing and that is therefore boring  • naked : not covered by clothes  • pass : (of an official group of people) to give approval to something, especially by voting to make it law  • pastime : an activity which is done for enjoyment; a hobby  • pipe : a short narrow tube with a small container at one end, used for smoking especially tobacco  • resemble : to look like or be like someone or something  • rotten : very bad  • sailing : the sport or activity of using boats with sails  • shot : no longer working or effective  • shun : to avoid something  • slob : a lazy, untidy and often rude person  • treacherous : dangerous  • UFO : ABBREVIATION FOR unidentified flying object: an object seen in the sky which is thought to be a spacecraft from another planet  • X is not much of a Y : X has few of the qualities usually associated with Y

01 Einstein liked having his feet naked.

“When I was young, I found out that the big toe always ends up making a hole in the sock,” he once said. “So I stopped wearing socks.” Einstein was also a fanatical slob, refusing to “dress properly” for anyone. Either people knew him or they didn’t, he reasoned – so it didn’t matter either way.

Do you like going barefoot when you can? Do you find that, like Einstein, your big toe makes holes in your socks? If not, where do the holes tend to develop in your socks? Do you ever wear socks even after they have holes in them? Do you throw away socks with holes in them, or try to mend them? Would you describe yourself as a “fanatical slob”? How much of a slob are you at home?

02 Einstein hated thinking too hard when he wasn’t working.

Aside from his favorite pastime, sailing (“the sport which demands the least energy”), Einstein shunned any recreational activity that required mental agility. As he told the New York Times, “When I get through with work I don’t want anything that requires the working of the mind.”

Do you hate thinking too hard when you’re not working? What do you tend to do in the evenings after work? What type of recreational activities appeal to you? Are there any that you shun? Have you ever been sailing? Is it something you enjoy, or think you would enjoy? What would you say is your favorite pastime? Why do you think it’s your favorite?

03 Einstein was a rotten speller.

Although he lived for many years in the United States and was fully bilingual, Einstein claimed never to be able to write in English because of “the treacherous spelling”. He never lost his distinctive German accent either, summed up by his catchphrase “I vill a little t’ink”.

Would you describe yourself as being a very bad speller in English? What words’ spellings give you trouble, if any? How about Chinese—do you often forget how to write common Chinese characters? Do you think it’s important to be able to spell (or write Chinese characters) correctly? Why or why not? Do you share Einstein’s opinion that English’s spelling is “treacherous”? Do you, like Einstein, have a catchphrase that you often use?

04 Einstein’s memory was shot.

Believing that birthdays were for children, his attitude is summed up in a letter he wrote to his girlfriend Mileva Maric: “My dear little sweetheart … first, my belated cordial congratulations on your birthday yesterday, which I forgot once again.”

How good do you think your memory is? Would you say your short-term memory is better, or your long-term memory is better? Do you also believe that birthdays are for children? How do you usually celebrate your birthday? If someone important to you forgot your birthday, would you be upset? Have you ever forgotten an important birthday? If so, what happened?

05 Einstein loathed science fiction.

Lest it distort pure science and give people the false illusion of scientific understanding, he recommended complete abstinence from any type of science fiction. “I never think of the future. It comes soon enough.” He also thought people who claimed to have seen UFOs should keep it to themselves.

What’s your opinion of science fiction? Do you have any favorite science fiction authors, novels, or movies? What is your favorite genre of fiction? Do you think often about the future? Have you read any books that make predictions about how the future will be? If so, what did you think of their predictions? Is your opinion about people who claim to have seen UFOs the same as Einstein’s?

06 Einstein was fond of cats.

Fond of cats, Einstein kept one that tended to get depressed whenever it rained. Mathematician Ernst Straus recalls him saying to the melancholy cat: “I know what’s wrong, dear fellow, but I don’t know how to turn it off.”

Are you also fond of cats? What type of animal do you like most? What kind of animal do you most resemble? What pets have you had? How would you describe their personalities? Did you talk to them like Einstein talked to his? What pets would you like to have in the future? Do you also tend to get depressed when it rains?

07 Einstein smoked like a chimney.

A life member of the Montreal Pipe Smokers Club, Einstein was quoted as saying: “Pipe smoking contributes to a somewhat calm and objective judgment of human affairs.” He once fell into the water during a boating expedition but managed heroically to hold on to his pipe.

Are you a smoker? If you are, how much do you smoke? What do you smoke? If you smoke cigarettes, what brand do you prefer, and why? If you’re not a smoker, have you ever tried smoking? What, if anything, do you use to give yourself a “calm and objective judgment of human affairs”?

08 Einstein did not drink alcohol.

At a press conference upon his arrival to New York in 1930, he said jokingly of Prohibition: “I don’t drink, so it’s all the same to me.” In fact, Einstein had been an outspoken critic of “passing laws which cannot be enforced”.

Do you enjoy drinking alcohol? What are your favorite alcoholic drinks? How much alcohol does it take for you to get drunk? How many times have you gotten drunk? Have you ever had an especially terrible (or wonderful) experience getting drunk? Can you think of any laws in Taiwan that cannot be effectively enforced? Do you think such laws should still be passed?

09 Einstein wasn’t much of a musician.

Einstein would relax in his kitchen with his trusty violin, stubbornly trying to improvise something of a tune. When that didn’t work, he’d have a crack at Mozart.

What musical instruments, if any, can you play? How good are you at playing them? How did you learn to play them, and how much time do you spend playing them? Have you tried, or wanted to try, composing music? If so, what genre of music was it? How important a part does music play in your music? What type of music is your favorite? Do you have any favorite musicians or pieces of music?

10 Einstein equated monogamy with monotony.

“All marriages are dangerous,” he once told an interviewer. “Marriage is the unsuccessful attempt to make something lasting out of an incident.” He was notoriously unfaithful as a husband, prone to falling in love with somebody else directly after the exchanging of vows.

Do you also equate monogamy with monotony? If not, how do you think a marriage can be kept from becoming boring? If you are married, would you describe your marriage as “dangerous”? Why or why not? If you are not married, do you think marriage will be a dangerous arrangement? If so, why? How much do you agree with Einstein’s description of marriage being “the unsuccessful attempt to make something lasting out of an incident.”

What government services do you think should be added? Why? If you could choose, would you rather live in a country with low taxes and few government services, or high taxes but many government services? Why?

RESULTS

Centrists espouse a “middle ground” regarding government control of the economy and personal behavior. Depending on the issue, they sometimes favor government intervention and sometimes support individual freedom of choice. Centrists pride themselves on keeping an open mind, tend to oppose “political extremes,” and emphasize what they describe as “practical” solutions to problems.

Liberals usually embrace freedom of choice in personal matters, but tend to support significant government control of the economy. They generally support a government-funded “safety net” to help the disadvantaged, and advocate strict regulation of business. Liberals tend to favor environmental regulations, defend civil liberties and free expression, support government action to promote equality, and tolerate diverse lifestyles.

Libertarians support maximum liberty in both personal and economic matters. They advocate a much smaller government; one that is limited to protecting individuals from coercion and violence. Libertarians tend to embrace individual responsibility, oppose government bureaucracy and taxes, promote private charity, tolerate diverse lifestyles, support the free market, and defend civil liberties.

Conservatives tend to favor economic freedom, but frequently support laws to restrict personal behavior that violates “traditional values.” They oppose excessive government control of business, while endorsing government action to defend morality and the traditional family structure. Conservatives usually support a strong military, oppose bureaucracy and high taxes, favor a free-market economy, and endorse strong law enforcement.

Statists want government to have a great deal of power over the economy and individual behavior. They frequently doubt whether economic liberty and individual freedom are practical options in today’s world. Statists tend to distrust the free market, support high taxes and centralized planning of the economy, oppose diverse lifestyles, and question the importance of civil liberties.
